¡Ay Carmela! at GALA Hispanic Theatre: A Benefit for the Latino GLBT History Project

Support the Preservation of Latino GLBT History in Metro DC!

September 14, 2011

The Board of Directors of the Latino GLBT History Project cordially invite you to join us for a preview showing of GALA Hispanic Theatre’s ¡Ay Carmela! on Wednesday, September 14, 2011. ¡Ay Carmela! by acclaimed playwright José Sanchis Sinisterra will make its U.S. premiere directed by José Luis Arellano-García in Spanish with English surtitles. This preview show is a benefit for the Latino GLBT History Project (LHP). Join us at 6:30pm for networking reception with light appetizers. Theatre seating begins at 7:30pm. The show begins promptly at 8:00pm.

Carmela and Paulino, a vaudeville comedy duo, have fallen into the hands of Franco’s fascists troops during the Spanish Civil War. Forced to put on a performance, they rehearse their show – flamenco songs, the paso doble, and bizarre comedy routines. But as heels and castanets clatter, their own intriguing story unfolds in a riot of black humor and ghostly passion. In a world still riddled with conflict, this heartbreaking portrayal of love and loss is a poignant testimony to the inhumanity of war.

We will kick-off LHP’s Hispanic LGBTQ Heritage events with this special fundraiser. Join as we reflect on the fierce oppression during Spanish Civil War through the eyes of Carmela and Paulino, played by Mona Martínez from Spain and Diego Mariani from Argentina, respectively. The play’s testimony to the inhumanity of war and reminds us of other tragic losses of life at the hands of the fascists such as, the great gay Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Reflecting on history we mourn the loss of democratic patriots and our LGBT sisters and brother during the Spanish Civil War. However, today we celebrate Spain’s leadership as the third country in the world to pass marriage equality for lesbian and gay couples in 2005.

Each season GALA Hispanic Theatre donates the preview night's show to a local non-profit organization working in the DC community.
