José Gutierrez works at La Clínica del Pueblo and serves on the Washington, DC. Mayor's LGBT Advisory Committee. He has been a human rights and AIDS activist nationally and locally since 1989, and was awarded with the Capital Pride Hero in 2005. He has received awards for his community work and multiple contributions to the Latino LGBTQ community from the National Latina/o Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organization, (LLEGÓ) as well as the Gertrude Stein Democratic Club. In March 2004 He published a bilingual poetry book entitled AIDS in My Letters-El SIDA de mis letras, and has sought to raise money and awareness through his work as the International Leatherboy 2002. He is the founder and president of the Latino GLBT History Project. In 2007 He organized the first DC Latino Pride “20 Años de Lucha!- 20 Years of Struggle!” which highlighted the history and contributions of the DC Latino LGBTQ community and attracted more than 250 people. Jose has been presenting and coordinating bilinguals presentations, forums and historic exhibits about the DC Latino LGBTQ community since April 2000. He writes every month an article in the national Latino magazine Adelante.
